Thelma “Tiny” Elzine Arens, 82, of Austin, died Thursday, August 20, 2015 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Thelma was born in Rockford, IL to Horace and Flora Cloyd on August 23, 1932. She grew up in the Rockford area. On November 17, 1953, Thelma married John Duane Arens. They moved to Austin and raised their two sons there. Thelma was a homemaker until her boys grew up. She then worked for the Austin Daily Herald as an inserter for over 20 years. She worked at the Austin American Legion and volunteered at the Salvation Army. John died on October 4, 2003. Thelma was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church and the Austin American Legion Auxiliary for 10 years. She loved hunting, fishing, gardening, knitting and crocheting. Thelma loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved the fall because she enjoyed preparing apples from her trees and vegetables from her garden for winter. Thelma is survived by her sons, John Jr. (Carol Supalla) of Austin, Jim (Carol) Arens of Austin; grandchildren, Andy, Jeremy, Robert, Steven, Jason and Lora, 15 great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews. Thelma is preceded in death by her parents, husband John, brothers and a sister. A Funeral Service will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Mayer Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm at Mayer Funeral Home and again an hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
