Rose Thompson

d. April 8, 2012

Rose M. Thompson, age 90, of Austin, Minnesota was welcomed home by God on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012 with both daughters by her side. Rose was born December 1, 1921 in Conger, Minnesota to Jack and Edith Somnis where she lived with her large family until she was a young adult. She then moved to Minneapolis and worked in a defense plant until she was married. On September 2, 1945 she married Milton Thompson at St. John's Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. The couple moved to Austin, Minnesota to build a home and begin their family. Rose was a very dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. Rose was a member of Crane Community Chapel for nearly fifty years, participated in the Womens Missionary Group, as well as serving as a Sunday School teacher for several years. Her generosity and giving nature showed in the many ways she cared for her own children as well as opening her heart and home to other children and relatives. She was the foundation of her family and enjoyed sewing, canning, playing cards and keeping in touch with all relatives by attending family reunions and other family gatherings. Survivors include two daughters, Michele (Mark) Smith, Forest City, IA, Kim Mireau, Austin, MN; five grandchildren, Angel Smith, Heather (Josh Cox) Smith, Forest City, IA, Jessica (Chris) Tabor, Curtis Smith and Edward Mireau, Austin, MN; three great grandchildren, Aldous Cox, Forest City, IA, Lukas and Megan Tabor, Austin, MN; sister, Barbara Ganske, Albert Lea, MN; brother, Roland (Pat) Somnis, Conger, MN; sister-in-law, Rosie Somnis; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Edith Somnis; husband, Milton; great granddaughter, Avalon; sister, Grace; four brothers, Johnny, Bob, Thomas and James; son-in-law, Brett; sisters-in-law, Jean and Delores; brother-in-law, Norman; three nephews, Danny, Warren and Darwin. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am on Friday, April 13, 2012 at Crane Community Chapel with Rev. Dale Christiansen officiating. Friends may call from 5-7 pm on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. It is the wish of Rose's granddaughter, Heather Smith and fiance, Josh Cox for her great granddaughter, Avalon Faith Cox to be carried to Heaven in the loving hands of her great grandmother. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to family, friends and Mayo Clinic Hospice who provided loving care (Lori), thoughtful actions (Cindy and Wes, Wendy and Shirley) and many visits (Vinnie and Jamie). She will be kept alive in our hearts forever.
