Matthew James Wagner

Matthew James Wagner, age 68, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2025, at his home. He was born on May 7, 1957, to John and Elaine (Caffes) Wagner. He was their 3rd son. Matt grew up in Austin, Minnesota, in a vibrant neighborhood. There was always a game or activity to join in on. He attended and graduated from Austin Catholic Schools. Matt then went on to graduate from college in Colorado Springs with a drafting degree. He saw Buzz Aldrin jogging several times during his time in Colorado. Matt came back to Austin and began working as a draftsman at Hormel for several years. He then went to work for Wagner Construction Company. His father, John, always said Matt had a gift for reading plans. He enjoyed working with his dad and his uncle Dave. On August 29, 1986, Matt married Susan Swanberg. They were blessed with three children, Alisa, Michael, and Andrew. Matt loved being a father and spending time fishing and boating with his children. He loved the outdoors, whether it was fishing or hunting pheasants with his brothers and best friend, his dog, Indy. Matt had an artistic eye and loved the changing light. He was also a talented musician and played piano, bass guitar, trumpet, and of course he could sing.

Survivors include his mother, Elaine Wagner; wife, Susan; children, Alisa, Michael, and Andrew; three brothers, Paul, John, and Brendhan; three sisters, Caroline, Kate, and Annabelle. He was preceded in death by his father, John Wagner; one brother, Nickolas; and numerous aunts and uncles.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Matt will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. The visitation will take place one hour prior to Mass. Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes of Austin are assisting the family with arrangements.
