Margaret Ellen Owens, age 97, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Our House Senior Living in Austin. Margaret was born December 31, 1928, in Austin, Minnesota, to John and Gladys (Salisbury) Owens. She graduated from Austin High School in 1947. Margaret worked at Hormel Foods for over 35 years until her retirement.
Margaret lived life to the fullest, capturing the spirit of adventure throughout her years. In the 1950s, she enjoyed driving new convertibles and later embraced the thrill of water sports with her first ski boat, followed by two others over the years. She traveled extensively, exploring numerous European countries, with her favorite trip being to Egypt to see the artifacts of King Tut.
In the 1970s, Margaret shared a 210-acre hobby farm with her eldest brother, where they created lasting memories and enjoyed the company of many horses. In 1970, she embraced winter sports with the purchase of a brand-new snowmobile, which fueled her passion for snowmobiling that she pursued whenever possible.
Around 1985, she bought a cabin near McGregor, where cherished family gatherings took place, and unforgettable moments with her grandsons, Ben, Eli, and Caleb. Remarkably, Margaret continued to water-ski into her 50s, showcasing her vibrant spirit and zest for life. Known affectionately as "Gram nit," her family will miss her dearly.
Margaret played an instrumental role in the life of her nephew, Richard, raising him from the age of six months and introducing him to a world filled with love and adventure.
Margaret is survived by her nephews, Rich and Mark; nieces, Becky, Patty, and Lorrie; grandsons, Ben, Eli, and Caleb; and sister-in-law, Kathy Owens. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gladys; and three brothers, Jack, Griff, and Richard.
A private interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Austin. Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes of Austin are assisting the family with arrangements.
