It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts, that we announce the passing of our beloved Kalewana Abela, who was born on February 2, 2000, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Akuata Opiew and Omot Abela. Kalewana spent the first couple of years of his life living in Minnesota. At a young age, Kalewana and his family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he spent most of his childhood, teenage, and some adult years making many lasting friendships and memories. Kalewana recently moved back to Austin, Minnesota. Kalewana tragically passed away on September 6, 2026, at Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester, Saint Marys Campus. Kalewana was a caring, loving, clever, and kind-hearted person. His sense of humor always brought a smile to those around him. He loved his family deeply, especially his nieces and nephews, and treasured the friendships he built throughout his life. His warm heart, caring spirit, and presence brought comfort and joy to those around him.
Kalewana is survived by his parents, Omot Abela and Akuata Opiew, as well as his siblings, Ogona Abela, Joseph Abela, and Leim Abela, along with his extended family, nieces, nephews, relatives, and many close friends who loved him dearly.
Kalewana was loved not only by his family and friends, but by everyone whose path he crossed. His kindness and loving spirit left a lasting impression on many lives. Though his time with us was far too short, the love and memories he gave us will remain in our hearts forever. We pray for those who are grieving his death, that God gives them comfort. Rest in peace, Kale.
A funeral service for Kalewana will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin. The visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin. Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes of Austin are assisting the family with arrangements.
