James Conrad Lugar

James Conrad Lugar, age 80, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, October 7, 2022, at Our House Senior Living in Austin. James was born on August 28, 1942, in Hampton, Iowa, to Dorsie and Norma (Ward) Lugar. James graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1961. Following graduation, he joined the United States Air Force and served our country honorably for 22 years until his retirement in 1986 with the rank of Master Sergeant.

After retirement from his beloved Air Force, James attended Nebraska Christian College where he studied Pastoral Ministries. While there, James volunteered as a van driver for the men’s basketball team and the cheerleading squad, forming lifetime friendships. James spent time serving on the audio/visual team at church and had heart for missions and potluck dinners. On Sunday mornings you could find him seated on the far-right hand side, third row from the front. He served as Chaplain to the Honor Guard and was honored to do so. James enjoyed his time in England and always made sure to sing his British version of “Happy Birthday” with his best British accent and a chuckle. He loved soccer and insisted it be called football. He was devoted to his country. He was kindhearted and generous to a fault. Most of all, James loved Jesus and spent his life being transformed by Love.

James is survived by many nieces and nephews; his family at Cornerstone Church in Austin; his DeFor/Justice/Riley family; many friends; and fellow honor guard members of the Austin American Legion Post 91 and the VFW Post 1216. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorsie and Norma Lugar; sisters Sara Ouverson and Marilea Wheeler, and brothers Givens “Buddy” Lugar and Daniel Lugar.
