Elmer Rathjen

Elmer, at age 97, went to meet his Lord and Savior on November 3rd, 2010 at the Cedars of Austin. He was born March 11th, 1913 in Nichols, Iowa to Alvena and Albert Rathjen. Elmer farmed with his father for several years and went on to buy a farm in Grandview, Iowa. He married Maxine McCain and they moved to Austin, Minnesota in 1949, where he farmed until his retirement. On any given day you could find Elmer working in the fields or gardening. He loved to watch things grow. He also liked to fish and visit with friends, neighbors and relatives. He loved life and children. Anytime there was a young child around you could find them on "Grandpas" lap. Elmer was remarried to Thelma Barr in 1976. She passed away in 2002. He resided at the Cedars of Austin until the time of his death. Preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, 5 sisters, and a grandson, Peter Blank. He is survived by son, Lee (Ruth) Rathjen of Austin, two daughters Joyce (Bruce) Blank of Phoenix, Arizona, and Winnie Wayne of Breezy Point, Minnesota. One brother, Willard Rathjen of Alpena, Michigan, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Forbes officiating. Friends may call from 4-6 pm on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.
