Donald "Don" Wayne Thompson

Donald “Don” Wayne Thompson, age 77, of Zumbro Falls, Minnesota, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2025, at his home. Don was born to Lester Thompson and Lois Nelson on August 25, 1947, in Rochester, Minnesota. He graduated from Rochester Public Schools and went on to earn his Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology from Austin Vo-Tech. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. On August 4, 1973, Don was united in marriage to Rose Billings at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Dexter, Minnesota. Don dedicated over 25 years of his life to Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester, Methodist Campus, where he worked cleaning surgical rooms. He enjoyed watching football, going to movies, attending concerts, and traveling with Rose, especially on cruises. Don was also an excellent swimmer and loved to play cards with friends. He was known for his warmth, humor, and ability to connect with everyone he met. Don was a hard worker and enjoyed driving courtesy vans to Mayo Clinic and the airport. His passion for music and dancing led him to many enjoyable nights at the Surf Ballroom.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; son, Jeremy Thompson; daughters, Michelle (Brian) Witter and Sarah (Ronald) McCargar; bonus son, Eric Amundrud; eight grandchildren, Silas Fisher, Lydia Thompson, Rowan Thompson, Amberlyn Witter, Aaron Witter, Alyssa McCargar, William McCargar, and Lauren McCargar; sisters, Connie (David) Courtright and Brenda Rounsaville; brother-in-law, David Billings; cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Lester (Lavonne) Thompson; mother, Lois (Lenno) Schmidt; sister, Donna Gage; brother, Brad Birch; other family and friends.

A funeral service for Don will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Worlein-Hoff Funeral Home in Austin. The visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Austin. Services are prearranged and performed by Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes of Austin.
