Dean Cleland Lukes

Dean C. Lukes, age 94, of Austin, MN, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

Dean Cleland Lukes was born on March 22, 1932, at the St. Olaf Hospital in Austin, MN, to Charles Lukes and Mabel (Magnuson) Lukes. After graduating from Austin High School in 1949, he attended Iowa State University before enlisting in the Army.

On December 5, 1953, he married the love of his life, Charlotte Mae Schewe. After Dean completed his military service, they returned to Austin, MN, where they shared 62 incredible years together. He shared his life with his beloved wife, building a marriage and family rooted in love, commitment, and countless memories. He often joked that Charlotte was the only person in the world who could leave him speechless—and that included the times he found himself in a little trouble! If you knew Dean, you knew that he sometimes forgot his age, and Charlotte was the only one who could slow him down. All she had to do was raise an eyebrow or her voice just a little, and Dean would stand at attention. After Charlotte passed, Dean was left to his own devices—and those who knew him knew that could be a dangerous combination! He could be found climbing onto tractors to help with repairs, firing up the blowtorch to burn the garbage, or driving around the neighborhood to check on the latest road construction projects. He certainly kept himself—and everyone around him—on their toes.

As a lifelong farmer, he understood the value of hard work, the beauty of a simple life, and the importance of showing up for the people and things that mattered most. His loyalty and dedication extended beyond the farm—Dean’s love for his community was evident through his active involvement on multiple boards, including the local school board. He believed in being involved, giving back, and doing his part to make his community a better place. He faithfully served as a member of Trondhjem Lutheran Church, where his faith remained an important part of his life. He loved traveling, bowling, playing cards, skiing, and going fishing “up north.”

Though our hearts grieve, we find peace in knowing that he is reunited with his bride. After 94 years of a life well lived, he leaves behind a legacy of faith, laughter, kindness, and unconditional love. He made a lasting impact on each and every one of us who had the privilege of knowing and loving him, and we are forever grateful for the memories, stories, and lessons he leaves behind. His stories may have come to an end, but the love and laughter he shared will live on in all of us.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Susan (Kelly) Kaercher, Darcy (Doran) Schroeder, and Greg (Tracy) Lukes; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him tremendous joy. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren include: Chelsie Kaercher and great-grandchildren Adrianna and Lahaila Deans; Jordan (Lauren) Lukes and great-grandchildren Brady and Bo Lukes; Lindsay (Ben) Schreiber and great-grandchildren Louis and Sloane Schreiber; Dylan (Molly) Schroeder; Cassie (Jordan) Hall and great-grandchildren Zao, Legend, Judea, Selah, Nissi, and Eviana Hall; Dana (Derek) Peterson; and Garrett (Amanda) Lukes.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Charlotte; his son, Randy; his parents; his brother, Sheldon Lukes; and many other cherished family members and friends.

We will celebrate Dean's life well lived on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Worlein-Hoff Funeral Home in Austin, Minnesota. The visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Please join us for lunch afterward. Interment will take place at Grandview Cemetery, Austin. Worlein-Hoff Funeral Homes of Austin are assisting the family with arrangements.
