Alice Snater

d. June 17, 2015

Alice E. Snater, age 78, of Austin, died Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at her home. Alice Elizabeth Kautzky was born June 27, 1936 near Perry, Iowa to Paul and Nona (Crellin) Kautzky. Alice attended school at Washington Township Consolidated School and St. Patrick’s Catholic High School in Perry, Iowa graduating in 1953 from St. Patrick’s. She married Orville W. Snater of Austin, Minnesota in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Perry, Iowa on September 17, 1955, and lived the rest of her life in Austin, Minnesota. Alice was very involved in community affairs in Austin serving on several boards and commissions, including Sacred Heart Care Center, the Audit Committee for Mower County Catholic Parishes Credit Union, Austin Human Rights Commission, Civil Service Police Commission, and Austin City Council. Alice was a member of Queen of Angels and later St. Augustine Catholic Church and assisted both parishes in the resettlement of two families, one from Laos and one from Bosnia. Alice served as a citizen volunteer for the city of Austin in the flood relocation projects in the early planning and collecting data for the federal and state grant programs from 1978 to 2004. Alice was a cofounder of the FACTS (Flood Action Citizens Task Source) which lobbied local, state and federal agencies for flood hazard mitigation projects. She kept an extensive scrap book of the flooding issues during these two years and donated it all to the Mower County Historical Society in 2013. She was a collaborative team member for the Parents Forever Program, a consortium team member for the Seibel Family Visitation and Exchange Center and a volunteer at Sacred Heart Care Center. In addition, Alice was a Eucharistic Minister distributing to residents at the Cedars and Sacred Heart Care Center, and during Mass at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Alice was employed at the Christian Education Center for seven years and assisted staff in relocating a refugee family from Viet Nam, was employed with the Austin Catholic Schools for 23 years in the administration office, and worked for the courts as an advocate for minor children for 25 ½ years. Survivors include six children, Mark Snater, Dianne Snater (Dave Riskedahl), Mike (Sue) Snater, John Snater, Theresa (Steve) Iverson, Kirsten Snater; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandsons; two brothers, Robert (Mary) Kautzky, Daniel (Peg) Kautzky; two sisters-in-law, Doris Hargis, Judy Norwich; nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Orville; parents; an infant son; two nephews. “To laugh often and much; to win with the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better place than we found it, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.” A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 am on Monday, June 22, 2015 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. There will be a 3 pm CCW rosary and a 6:45 pm wake service on Sunday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 3-7 pm and also one hour before the service at the church on Monday.
